OBC Reservation - A deadly political weapon

All the views mentioned as under are entirely personal and if someone feels hurt, it is totally coincidental and unintentional.

The much waited Supreme court judgement has been announced granting OBC reservation to non-creamy layer. I personally believe this heinous act of impeding the growth of world class educational institutes has been committed to derive political mileage in the upcoming elections. Every political party will try to harvest this issue to the maximum but here are a few facts:

1. There are approximately less than 2000 IIM seats, less than 5000 IIT seats and hardly 500 seats in the medical institutes like AIIMS etc. which are getting affected by this judgement. The total number of reserved seats (27% reservation) would mean approximately 1500-2000 students annually. Now, this is a minuscule number in our country of a population of 1 Billion whose significant percentage of population falls under OBC. So, only a small fraction of aam aadmi gets affected but a large vote bank can be moved because whether we like it or not, caste politics is still widely prevalent in this country, specially states like UP, Bihar where the regional parties like RJD, SP and BSP continually play the caste card.

2. But, it kills these institutes which have been built in last five decades with the sweat and blood of visionaries like Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. Fortunately, I have studied at both IIT and IIM and I can say for sure, their biggest strength is their incoming talent pool which will get majorly diluted with the reservation policy.

3. Our friends from the oppressed section of the society need enablement and not reservation. I have seen people from SC/ST reservation struggling in academics at IIT (which are much easier than entrance exams in difficulty level) and spending extra year. In IIT, we had a prep course for a significant number of SC/ST students to bring them at par with other students. How is the mismanagement of quality higher education justified in the name of reservation?

4. Who gets the benefit of reservation? For getting into IIT with reservation, the kid needs to do his intermediate at a good school. Now a days, he must go to an IIT coaching institute as well - who can pay for all this? Only those in reserved category who do not need reservation....
I know of friends who are studying at second line of colleges despite being adequately smart because they were born as high caste but believe me the colour of their blood is same as that of an OBC/SC/ST.

5. What should we do? More initiatives like super 30 in Patna by Mr. Anand Kumar may be a step in the right direction.

6. The honorable SC has suggested that the need for reservation should be reviewed regularly. Does any political party have the courage to withdraw reservation? If I am not wrong, even SC/ST reservation was introduced for a period of 10 years with a need to review after that and it has been extended ever since by every political party.

Finally, I would like to use this forum to urge you to express your views candidly in the comments section of this blog.

These concerns are being voiced by the student fraternity for years now...and after the supreme court's ruling,i wonder if any agitation/protest/discussion would lead to anything at all!

Correction No. 1: The whole reservation will be applied to entire central University of which IIT n IIM are just a small part ..so thr wud be lots of student who will be getting the benefit.

Correction No. 2: What do u mean by merit or talent? Can u define it properly? scoring in CAT or JEE proves talent?? Remember in the country like india Exams are conducted not for selection but for rejection !!

Correction No. 3: When the reservation came for Job ( mandal comm..) we said why should we give reservation in job..instead we shud give them reservation in education which will make them enable to get job...when it came in higher education we are saying why in PG courses we shud enable them at primary level only...and so on...remember world is not ideal ...there is big disparity in society and financially forward doesnt translate into socially forward..if thats the case then OBC doesnt need reservation but money.

Correction No. 4: Everyone is opportunist...political parties , sections of society n everyone...ur blog sounds like u r talking for the society as a whole..

Correction No. 5: Super 30 in patna..lol do u know what the fuk that goes thr?? I have studied thr and i know whats tht super 30. They have 200-300 ppl in 1 batch and they run N no. of batches and to make this kinda cheap advertise they pick up 30 best students from all over the batch and just publicise thr coaching with those kinda words.....and I was a member of super 30.

more to come late...got to go...try to answer when u find time :)
keep going

referring to anonymous comment suggestion lots of corrections:

On correction no.2:
If the exams don't prove talent or merit, can you explain me why do SC/ST category students perform so badly in academics in IIT, although after getting admission they get the same treatment like other students.
(sry much more than same...they get 4 times what other students get.
4times no. of books issued from library, 4times less fees, 4times scholarship etc)

So the summary is:
lower the performance parameters scale in JEE, the lower the merit, the lower the performance(even later in life).

Regarding modi's 4th point:
As rightly said, only SC/ST people who can afford coaching classes get admissions. So the underprivileged still remain underprivileged.
But even these SC/ST students who get the same intermediate school privileges, perform badly in academics at IIT. So just compare the difference in selection criteria in IITJEE.
People might argue that even some general category students perform badly. The % of people from SC/ST category who perform badly is much higher than those from general category.
You need to be at IIT to figure this out. :)

good points Anonymous :), the corrections.
So modi one more question is nagging me, what solution do you propose this problem? both in the long term and in the short term. And what are you gonna do about it, because the blog you have written is true but not complete and very well known. I mean this all I keep hearing from many many mouths.

Opinion sounds good and logical..but non of our politicians are concerned about the development issue..so better be ready to see these institutes crumble before our eyes.

Hey Kumar,
what do you mean by "be ready", thats so lame. why can't to protest against it in your own way. The only reason parties try to woo OBCs is that they are the ones who vote more then the middle class, no offense against anyone here. So if you too cast your vote and show them that you are voting against their policies. Make the count against them a significant number. it would be a long term solution for the cheap politics.

Now for what has already been done, you have other solutions like opening new Institutes, better then IITs and IIMs. Have you heard of revival of takshshila university, do you have any idea how good it is going to be.

All I am trying to say here is that, cribbing for politics is waste, it has always been such. We should rather find the solutions to put a check on it

Please excuse me spelling and grammatical mistakes, and let me know if there are any.
